BOTOX as a Treatment for TMJ
TMJ disorder is the phrase used to describe problems with the temporomandibular joints. These joints connect the head to the lower jaw. When stress is placed on the joints and muscles surrounding the tissue, you can develop headaches, jaw, neck and shoulder pain, or popping of the jaw. Symptoms of TMJ disorder can vary, and it is important to have a thorough assessment to avoid long-term damage. Without treatment, TMJ disorder can cause damage to the teeth, gums, and jaws.
My practice uses BOTOX® injections to ease the symptoms of TMJ disorder. BOTOX® injections can effectively relieve the tension in the surrounding muscles and reduce jaw clenching. If headaches are present due to muscle related issues, BOTOX® injection will help to ease the pain. With the addition of a night guard, TMJ disorder symptoms can be effectively treated. This course of action is effective only if the TMJ disorder is caused by muscle related causes. If it is not muscle related, then BOTOX® injections can be used as a diagnostic tool to help identify what is causing the pain. Once the cause is identified we can provide solutions, such as full mouth reconstruction, increasing the bite, or opening the bite. Identifying the cause will help determine the best course of treatment. Caring, personalized treatment is our goal.
If BOTOX® injections and night guard treatment are ineffective, more extensive treatments are available. Full mouth reconstruction used to correct jaw alignment might be necessary if symptoms are persistent. This procedure is performed by a TMJ surgeon after diagnosis with a CT scan.
